Cyclone Ockhi struck-Holiday declared in 5 district in Tamil Nadu
As the rain refused to let up, district across Tamil Nadu have declared holidays for schools and colleges. Torretial Rains pounded southern districts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring Kerala crippling life and claiming eight lives four each in the two states as a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm Ockhi on Thursday. Both the state government put the official machinery on high alert as the cyclone, lying 60 km south of Kanyakumari, was forecast to dump more rains in south Tamil Nadu and Kerala in these 24 hours. The storm was expected to move towards the Lakshadweep archipelago and hit the islands on Saturday. Storage levels are up by six feet in Periyar dam and one foot in vaigai dam due to heavy inflow. Contributed to by the heavy rains, the Inflow into Periyar dam was registered as 16,022 Cusecs and Vaigai Dam as 2,507 Cusecs. Continuous heavy rainfall and storage winds have resulted in a holiday being declared for schools Tiruvannamalai, Madurai, Dindigul, Kancheepuram and then district on Friday.
